Spring Assessment Season

Spring is upon us, and summer is approaching which means we are getting down to the last few weeks of school! We are working hard to fit in all of our learning before the end of the year. This also means, our first graders have lots of opportunities to show off their learning. Between end of unit assessments, reading groups assessments, and state mandated FASTBridge screeners, we've got a LOT of assessing to do! Rest assured, your first grader is also having lots of fun and continuing to learn despite squeezing all of these assessments over the next few weeks. Also on that note, I am so proud of how far our first graders have come, even with the few weeks left, I can see so much growth from when I returned from maternity leave until now. You and your first grader have a lot to be proud of! I can't wait to share all of this growth with you in the coming weeks with progress reports and report cards coming at the end of the year.

Help Us Out
In library and computer lab classes, 1st graders are going to start a cardboard challenge. They will need to design and build a product using cardboard, a few materials, and their imagination! We are in need of materials for this fun project. We love any donations of the following:
-cardboard (any kind- cereal boxes work too!)
-yarn/string
-packaging/duct tape
-construction paper
-Any items you think might be used to create- buttons, stickers- use your imagination!
Please send in any materials by Thursday, May 23rd. Thank you for your support- we are excited to see what the students can create!
Sight Words
We have now learned all of the first grade sight words. Students are doing a pretty good job of reading the words, but we could use some extra practice with spelling them. The sight word lists from now on will be a review of some of the trickier first grade words. Please practice reading and writing these sight words each night with your child. Our goal is for students to be able to read the words quickly without having to sound them out and to spell them accurately in their writing. Students can also practice these sight words through fun games and activities at the following website: https://www.spellingcity.com/1stgrade1516/ If you would like a list of what specific words your child should be working on, please email me.
