Winter, Winter, Go AWAY!!

I don't know about all of you, but here in room 13, we are a little bit sick of this cold, dreary weather! We are ready to get outside to explore and run off some of some energy! I am hoping the weather turns around in the next few weeks here, so we can do some exploring outdoors during our plants and animals unit in science! For now, we'll stay bundled up and keep wishing for sunshine and warmth!

This week in our room we welcomed a new student, Olivia! All of our first graders were so welcoming and great role models of what our expectations are in our classroom. We had lots of eager helpers wanting to show Olivia around the room and walk her through everything she needs to know :) We also got some class pets in our classroom in the form of 6 tiny caterpillars. Your first grader may have told you they did some opinion writing last week about what class pet we should get and although bunnies, dogs, otters, and tigers all sound fun, Mrs. W opted for the slightly easier to care for caterpillars. Although they may not be quite as active as a bunny or tiger in our classroom, we are excited to watch them go through their life cycle and transform into butterflies over the next few weeks!

We also began our new writing unit on personal narratives, a new math unit on collecting and analyzing data on graphs, and continued our work on our retells and learning about communities changing over time. On Thursday we had our first JA session. We will meet with our JA volunteer four more times before the end of the year to learn more about families, communities, and needs/wants.

Please see our "Need to Knows" below for important upcoming events and reminders! As always, please contact me with any questions and check out our Facebook page for daily updates!

Students may bring in coin donations or additional items needed such as Clorox Wipes, HE Laundry Detergent and old blankets or towels.

Upcoming Guest Teacher Days

I have been really fortunate this year to not have to be out of the classroom very much, however, April has brought me many professional opportunities to grow, so I will be out of the classroom for a few days and wanted to let you all know ahead of time to help prep your first grader to have a great day with a guest teacher.

I am so very excited to share with you that I have been asked to speak at the Iowa ASCD Curriculum Leadership Academy in Des Moines on April 20th. I will be sharing some of the innovative things your first graders have been doing in our classroom (I always tell them, I spend a great deal of time bragging about all the great things they do, so now I get to brag about them to a larger group of people!). I will also be participating in some training and curriculum revision teams for a few days. Below are the dates I will be gone.

April 23rd Afternoon - District Revision Team Work
