We had yet another great week full of learning! Yesterday (Thursday) we had a guest teacher and I am SO proud of our first graders handling an unexpected guest teacher! We got great a great report from the guest teacher and celebrated with donuts this morning! Read on to see what we have been up to!

Reading: Our shared reading story this week was Pigs in a Rig. Our phonics focus was short o and short u. We practiced reading with expression so that it doesn't sound boring when we read. During read aloud we learned that there are three ways we can connect to a book we are reading: text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world. We focused on making text-to-self connections and using our own experiences to better understand characters in the stories we read. Ask your first grader to make connections to their books when you read at home!

Writing: This week we introduced a writing rubric to look at quality writing. We spent time analyzing our own writing so far and making goals for what we can do to make our writing stronger.

Math: Our focus this week was counting to 120. We counted in a variety of ways including 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's. You can help your first grader by having them start at any number and counting up to 120. Our goal in first grade is to be able to read, write, and represent all numbers 0-120 (drawing out 10's and 1's). Practice this at home!

Science: We continued learning about tools meteorologists use to observe the weather. We began our week by using bubbles to observe the wind. We then learned about anemometers, which measure wind speed. We made our own class anemometer and took it outside to observe the wind. Finally, we got to make our own mini anemometers and experiment with them as well.

Social Emotional: Mrs. Cox visited our room this week to help us practice our self talk. We learned we can repeat directions to ourselves to help us remember what to do. We also discussed ways to help ourselves focus and learn.
