If You Take a Mouse to School...

We had another great week here in room 13! We got to know each other better, and yes, we continued to practice expectations and procedures throughout the building. We have been working hard to build our read to self stamina (we made it all the way to 6 minutes and 21 seconds of reading silently!), expand our math knowledge through discussion and hands on learning, as well as make our own class books during writing!

This weekend kicks off college football season so the teachers all wore their favorite team shirts today. Mrs. Wilaby wore a panthers shirt and spread the panther love to our classroom by teaching the kids the interlude, a fun dance that UNI students do at sporting events. It was LOTS of fun :)

Today was an especially fun day as we tried our first ever Breakout EDU (which was SO much fun)! Think escape room, but child friendly and with boxes rather than shutting them in a room. We came back from lunch and recess to discover that our pencil boxes were gone, and all that was left was a mysterious note!

After finding the note, we worked together to solve five different puzzles around the room. Each puzzle helped us unlock a box that gave us a clue to find out where our pencil boxes were. In the end when we worked together, we were able to solve all of the puzzles and get our pencil boxes back! As a reward, we had a color page and got to watch a video of the story If You Take a Mouse to School! Bear with me here, I know they all look in shock in these photos, it's because they were all talking about a mile a minute about the clues and working hard to solve the puzzles within the timeframe...it was difficult to get good photos, but they had SO much fun :)

We also started our science unit about air and weather! We did an experiment to see if a cotton ball would get wet if we put it in the bottom of a vile and then dunked it in the water. To our surprise, it stayed dry! We discovered that was because air was in the vile and the air kept the water out. You can check out this experiment and other experiments with air on this blog here. Try some at home!

As if that weren't enough fun today, we also got a school wide surprise celebration for being respectful, responsible, and safe for the first two weeks of school! The whole school got to go outside and chalk the walk with things we love about Prairie Crest! It was a gorgeous afternoon and we had lots of great things to say about Crest! Again, not the best photos, I promise, I'll get better at taking action shots :)

The first two weeks of school have been awesome! I am excited for the rest of the school year! Please read below for our "Need to Knows".
